When you’re driving a police vehicle or an emergency services vehicle, in circumstances warranting doing so, and you have the lights and/or siren on (police may omit this if reasonable to do so in the circumstances)-per sections 305 and 306 of the Transport Operations (Road Use Management - Road Rules) Regulation 2009

What are the legal reasons were you maybe permitted to go over the speed limit?
Only if there is an emergency and need to provide proof, like going for life threatening reason to hospital, and not to increase the risk of accidents, with this you may get out of that speeding fine, also depends on how much you were speeding, it will be at the magistrate's decision.
