hey :) we got a massive electricity bill, the first bill at our apartment we rent and there was a $180 security deposit on it. However we were not informed of this at all, there was no information on their dodgy looking website about it anywhere, no information on the bill anywhere or anything, let alone how to get the money back. Os it even legal for them to surprise us with a security deposit? I have tried contacting them and got nowhere.

It is possible for energy companies to charge and hold a security deposit. They should have some form of terms and conditions document which explains the circumstances. If you don't feel that they do, contact them and ask where you can find the information.
