Good afternoon,

My child is born in Australia and some people have told me I need to get an Australian citizenship for my child as the birth certificate is not enough. How do I get an Australian citizenship certificate for my child?

Thank you.

At the time the child was born, was one or other parent lawfully in Australia (eg a permanent resident or a citizen)?

Both. I am an Australian citizen and my wife is a permanent resident.

Thank you

If one parent was already a citizen at the time the child was born,
and the child was born in Australia, then
the child will probably be a citizen by birth.

Remember, the Birth Certificate already contains a record of the place of birth.

It is certainly possible to obtain additional documents (such as a Certificate of Citizenship)
that attest to the citizenship of the child.
But for the ordinary everyday citizen, these documents are not compulsory.

  1. They who?
  2. You only need a passport for the child if the child is travelling overseas.
  3. Information about passports is available in several languages, not just English, if that helps.

They may have been looking for documents proving identity, not citizenship.
