Hi all,

As a family unit we are strong, but my 16-year-old son refuses to have anything to do with his immediate and other paternal family members. It has been one year since he has not resided at our premises and has self-elected not to live or see us.

How does the family court determine if this situation is classified as being extreme family breakdown?

We love our child, care for our child, willing to go to counselling with our child, but he has removed our rights to be parents to him and care for him, at the moment his whole life evolves around his friends and refuses to go to school.

Look, being 16 years of age, I don't know that the Court is going to try and force your son to play ball with you and your family. Even judges know that all kids reach an age where they will vote with their feet.

This might be one best left alone until the child is a little older and capable of seeing things from a more balanced perspective.
