So about 4 weeks ago I got paid a fortnights worth of pay (around 1k) by an old employer. I didn't contact them whatsoever and they've contacted me just now. Just wondering what are my options and choices. I'm willing to give it back however I'm quite financially unstable at the moment. Is there a time frame which I can extend it to? Any help is appreciated thanks!

The correct moral thing is to return the money asap. It is not yours and shouldn't be a hard decision.

The law is not good at handling moral situations so just do the right thing.

Is the amount identical amount to (what was) your usual pay?

If not, then are you sure that it wasn't, say back pay?
This can happen when a wage rise finally "comes through",
but with a date of effect of some time previously.

Could be leave entitlements that they owed you, that was not paid out at the time you left?

Apparently it was supposed to be a different Kevin and they mistakenly sent it to me. Definitely not my pay.

You can enter into a payment plan.

Well then, your initial thinking was right.
If it's not yours, then you have to give it back.

As to a payment plan, don't bank on it.
Absent some sort of court order, your former employer is under no obligation to do any such thing.
The employer is quite within their rights to insist that you give it back in one lump sum.
