If a parent is required to pay child support and is not paying and there assessment shows a low income and you know for a fact they earn much more , what can be done about it .

You can call CSA and request a new child support maintenance assessment.

CSA have access to the other parent's income if they are employed and work in Australia. Also CSA has access to a person's tax returns.

Three weaknesses I see are

1. where a parent is self employed, however eventually the tax returns should show the correct income and any shortfall will be backdated.

2. the other parent either doesnt submit his/her tax returns (eventually the ATO will insist on the submission of tax returns but that could take years) or the other parent lies on their tax returns (obvious risks in committing tax evasion)

3. the other parent works and lives abroad but even there the CSA has agreements with most countries and can chase them for child support - but I would guess this is a long drawn out process.

Best thing is to call CSA - you cant see anyone face-to-face at Centrelink about child support as its such an emotive issue people get too upset with the government employee. Don't call around lunch time or you may as well kiss your afternoon goodbye to being on hold. And if you have any proof of the other parent's earnings that will obviously help.

Good luck
