Is it illegal to hold a wedding ceremony in the backyard of a rental property? Our landlord has seen evidence of our wedding on facebook (is he even allowed to trawl our facebook?) and has contacted us to let us know he is not happy that we had the ceremony at his house.

If your Facebook is set to 'public' then there's no issue with them looking at it.

Your starting point should be to look at the terms of your tenancy agreement, and consider that in light of how many people you will be having/what facilities you will be using.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
The tenancy was informal so we had no written tenancy agreement.
The wedding was 3 years ago, was small (35 people) and held outside of the house, and no damage was caused. Also, we moved out 2 months ago, but this is just being brought up now!
I am wondering if the wedding falls within our right to 'quiet enjoyment' of the property? And in the worst case scenario, what could he possibly claim against us?

There's nothing illegal about holding a wedding at a private residence, per se. The only potential issues would have been (a) the terms of your tenancy arrangements with the landlord or (b) your local council requirements (if any). From that perspective it's not so much a wedding as a 'large party'.

Unless your landlord specifically forbid you from having a big party at the house, the most it would come down to would be a courtesy thing in telling them what you were going to do. Since the tenancy has already ended (and assuming you've received any carry over issues about bond, cleaning and damage are finalised) then it's most likely that all you're going to face from the ex-landlord is some whinging.
