Hi
My friend is 30 and is recently caught shoplifting. He stole stuffs worth 290 and at first he kept refusing and later in front of police he admitted. They took all his details and let him go but said u wud be called to court?
Plz help if he would be sentenced to jail? How much would be the fine?
Cuz they just let him go he does not know wat shud he do now? He doesnt want his wife to know about the whole thing as hes embarrased, will he have to hire the lawyer cuz then hes just worried his wife would know and hes just very shamefull!! How long will this stay under his name?? Will it affect his job profile too??
Plz help
Thanks

Unless he has extremely long priors, gaol wouldn't be imposed. The sentence would depend on a lot of factors.
This was his first and last time.. he has no criminal record whatsoever.. do u think he should consult a lawyer and what shud he even say cuz he dont know wat wud be the next step from cops..
thanks for ur reply.

Can i plz ask if he can go without the lawyer as in no case he wants his wife and anyone to know about this shameless incident. He spoke with a legal aid officer but just cuz police hasnt contacted him yet so the legal aid officer does not know wat to say! He cant afford lawyers fee and is just breaking down. Do u think will it be ok to represent himself in court or in police station be ok?
Plz reply!

In these cases, a lawyer is a must, in court, a person has one chance, and if acted wrongly, it can result in a bad outcome. Your friend should fess up to his wife and take responsibility, he did a wrong thing and doing more wrong things will not help him at all. He is digging a bigger hole for himself.
