Wife left. Living elsewhere. Refuses to pay the mortgage. Jointly owned property. I know I must pay the mortgage. Can I take a boarder to help with that?

Legally, no problem.
But you can be sure that it will provoke a sh!t storm from her.

Also, the money the boarder pays you will probably be
taxable income for you (matter how it is eventually spent),
and will also be relevant to calculating any child support
or other payments for which you are liable when the time comes.

Read the capital gains tax bit carefully.

get a boarder. If they are not on centerlink then they will have no issues paying cash....

IF that does not work then take them in. relax... If the ex whinges offer to give her half of the boarders rent only as long as the ex agrees to pay half the mortgage.. Go on dare ya.

Get a lodger.. don't worry about the nitty gritty - Even child support isn't an issue. One of the other punters has suggested it could be but they are wrong. As the payer (which assuming there are kids and assuming she is primary carer) there is a provision for additional income to be quarantined for the first 2 years because you're trying to get back on your feet.... So don't worry about that one.
