Hi, This might be a strange question but I would like to know of the sponsors obligations in regards to when making complaints about their club that their sponsoring engaging in criminal activities that one of the players was reported to the Police as they claim that they have no obligations to do anything and don't want to know about it as I have contacted Bendigo and Adelaide Bank's head office.

From speaking with the ombudsman I was advised sponsorship arrangements are government regulated and surely at the very least they should have some legal obligation of being informed about it and the matter to be consulted with the club their sponsoring.

I have a crime report number that was provided to them as evidence of a formal complaint made and a Police investigation initiated.

There are juniors that play for the club and in the competition and most disturbing of all juniors playing in senior teams, sporting clubs have a legal duty of care to protect the children, how can I make a complaint about the club as they are sweeping it under the carpet, almost immediately flicking me an email saying its closed including the cricket competition organisers, there must be a law against it. You can't have juniors playing with senior players engaging in criminal activities.

Hi there

Apologies for not responding to your question in this comment. Would you mind redrafting your first paragraph as I was not able to understand exactly what you were describing?

Thank you in advance.

I was telling the bank who is a major sponsor of a sporting club that they are sponsoring about an individual of that club engaging in offensive behaviour that the Police are investigating and I was told by a customer service officer at the head office that they have no obligations to do anything and didn't want to know anything about it.

I was advised by a financial ombudsman that there are Government regulations for sponsorship arrangements. They should at the very least be consulting with the club that their sponsoring, about the criminal matter surely. They can't just sponsor people willey-nilly as these are very serious matters that can effect their reputation, in particularly when they have their logo's on their uniforms.

Hi there

Thank you for clarifying. The response below is quite general.

If you are concerned about the club discharging its duty of care to juniors one option is to raise this with the club directly.

Player behaviour is a factor that sponsors will likely consider in the context of sponsorship arrangements and naturally a sponsor will generally prefer to be kept well informed about matters which are important to the sponsor. Likely the club and sponsor will have in place arrangements to stay well informed.

If you want the sponsor to withdraw or reconsider its funding based on the behaviour of a player, be careful how you raise this because in the first instance it might seem strange to them that a party outside of the contract will want to potentially jeopardise it.

Let us know how it goes.
