I am a pensioner.

Yesterday, 2othJuly, I was banned from entering our local Market for one year by the Markets Manager who said she was acting on behalf of the Markets CEO. The CEO was motivated by stories from our local Bar licensee, who several weeks earlier had approached me outside the Bar within the Market Place, saying that on three separate occasions (over 15-20 years patronage) I have tried to pass-off my home telephone number to customers and on one occasion, I touched another persons foot under the table.

After this first weird confrontation we never to ventured into the Bar again as this whole thing is thoroughly distasteful for my wife and I, but we have continued to shop at our Markets for fruit and vegetables on the weekends, like my wife has done all her life in this town. When we visit the fresh food markets we always stand outside the Bar and listen to the wonderful Buskers who play music in the open Bar... there is no door, just a white line pained on the floor that neither of us would ever want to step over.

The most recent accusation passed-down by the CEO which the Market Manager voiced was that I was telephoning people in the Bar whilst there (neither my wife or myself have mobile phones). Hearing this fresh barrage of insults brought my wife to tears. She alerted me not to give them my ID or my surname as the Mgr said they would send this information to the Police.

I tried to explain to the Mgr and the Security Guard who stood in front of the tiny door where all this nonsense was coming from but the Mgr said the Owner had a right to shut people out and then cited that I wouldn't want Religious Door Knockers in my house. She then sought to take my photograph but we refused to go any further with this sordid interview and pushed our way out of the tiny office and caught our bus home.

What rights I have? How do I stop these people spreading lies and defamation about me?

Can anyone help?

Hi Bryan,

They may not have given you the real opportunity to put your version of events so they may not have provided you with what is called procedural fairness.

Unfortunately it seems here the markets authority may have authority to prevent entry to people they don't want in there, as owner/occupier of the premises.

There may not be a lot you can do other than just not go there.

Perhaps see a Solicitor and discuss the matter further, they may give you possible options that are not coming to my mind right now.

Hope that helps you.

thank you Paul.
The Newspaper is investigating and may publish next week.
The Markets certainly haven't practiced procedural fairness.

Dont know that word Tim, so I looked it up.
"Word not found in the Dictionary and Encyclopedia."
Is this a word specific to Lawyering?

It means speaking on religious topics with a view to encouraging others to adopt the religion being discussed.
It differs from words like "preaching" or "spreading the gospel"
in that it can apply to the doctrine of any faith , not just Christianity.
